The Science of Sprinting - Editorial Illustration

The Science of Sprinting - Editorial Illustration, June 2014

The brief asked for the production of an editorial illustration for a technical magazine article entitled ‘The Science of Sprinting’. The article discussed how bodies of top level sprinters differ from those of the average person, thus allowing them to achieve far superior athletic performance.

The contents of the article were highly technical and discussed different facets of an athletes physiology and the motion of their bodies. In order to reflect this aspect of the article I decide to create an abstracted image that implied the energy, movement and the electrical impulses of a sprinter during a race.

To create the image, I used a stop motion photographic technique of myself sprinting. I then used this as a basis from which to compile abstract forms taking some influence from the Cubist and Futurist movements. In order to create texture I then recreated the base composition using cotton sewn into card. This was then photographed, recomposed and manipulated digitally into the final image.
