My Final Project in completion of my Masters.
Project Rationale for submission:

Finders Seek.

Living in a digital age does not mean printed design needs to be abandoned. Digital applications and advertisements have built a platform for print to step onto with honour and possibly be more considered by its dedicated audience. One of the best things about owning a piece of printed work, is owning the piece of printed work. In printed format the owner is then in charge of that print’s destiny, where you cannot cherish and abuse digital outcomes in the same manner.
I want to embrace my position as a designer and within my field of study, inspire my intended audience by navigating them around different cities and so they can place themselves into the position of my provided drawn suggestions. The objective of getting people to these separate locations around the city will hopefully urge them to look beyond the highlighted content and mapped ideas whilst on route. Unlike travel guides currently accessible to us, I am creating something built to provoke inspiration and motivation and advertise the city discreetly at the same time as leaving a fraction to the freedom of their imagination. It is important within my concept to leave aspects to the imagination, as I want my final outcome to be a seed planted, that the audience can take to then fertilise the notion and enjoy it.
I see my work holding additional value, by the motive of advertising not being to generate money, but to encourage the appreciation of the city.
There will not be photographs of the exact views that are to be seen in the spots that I am leading the audience to. This should leave suspense of what is expected, I also feel it will be restricting to provide a single photograph when so much more is to be absorbed from the panoramic view in person. There will be my photography of the city used, to give a varied hint at the place and for atmospheric purposes.
Deciding to produce a double sided fold out poster which mimics the format of a map means it can be kept as a memory, pinned on a wall, hidden away for times of reference, ripped apart to take a piece away or possibly just used and thrown away.
Whatever imagined possible is possible if a printed piece can be held.
Work intro:

The world is ours, they say.
There will be points carried with us and parts left behind, but it is with open eyes that these decisions can be made assiduously. Discovering a treasured element comes from seeking, as does the chance to dislike, the understanding of choice is beautiful.
Here is the city outline of Portsmouth, with a handful of pinned spots to view and float between as the map holder desires. With purposely-emptied areas between the drawn suggestions, there are vast opportunities to go off track and see what Portsmouth has to inspire or perhaps to inspire disfavour, doubtful but perfectly possible and not a harmful conclusion to draw.
With hope to encourage it’s audience with an unnatural thought process, developing an array of memories or securing images to reflect upon and savour, this guide has an objective and that is to animate the owners intention seek to find.
Here are the final designs, presented as they were designed.
When printed it is folded.
Zooming into a few details on the printed and folded map/publication.

Every photograph, sentence, composition and format is original and my own. The project was a very independent piece of work and not really the way I always like to work but I am happy with the result and it has only made me stronger as a designer.

I like collaborating and brainstorming with other creatives, I feel it is healthy to step outside your box and to both take on new ideas and disagree with new ideas. I still prefer this way of working, but my final year of studying to achieve my MDes Graphic Design forced me to battle with my own mind and it was rewarding. I did get occasional opinions from tutors and classmates who were hugely appreciated and I enjoyed seeing other creative briefs being written and worked at.
