Aimee Fraser's profile

International Style Postcard Design

With an emphasis on clarity and objective visual communication, the international design style can be characterised by its simplicity, use of grids and geometry, and emphasised typography. The style first emerged within Russia, Germany, and the Netherlands during the 1920s, with roots in Bauhaus and constructivism styles, before becoming further developed in 1950s Switzerland.
I was inspired by designer Mike Joyce, who also used overlapping geometric shapes and an overall simple design style. My colour palette took inspiration from constructivism which influenced this style and often used red as the main colour in many designs.
This design is one of four postcards I designed as part of an assignment as a part of my university degree. I was tasked with analysing a range of iconic design movements and styles, while interpreting the theme “Design is…” in a design targeting high school students considering studying a Bachelor of Design at the University of Waikato.
